Paid a visit to Venus Pools NR in February to grab some year ticks (Brambling was the target). A single male showed, but always distant and in the shade. I think he was wary of the Sparrowhawk, unfrotunately a Long-Tailed Tit wasn’t so cautious. Sometimes nature can be so cruel, but to witness something so quick and natural at such close quarters was unbelievable. There were 5 of us in the hide, and 5 lenses all pointing at the feeder, the Sparrowhawk was so intent on a meal, he even came back for seconds!
Nuthatch, Great-Spotted Woodpecker (x4), Long-Tailed Tit and plenty of other woodland birds made for a very rewarding day.
Wigeon are lovely birds. Lucky to capture some in very good light back in February.
And then tried a new location for the Beluga landing at Hawarden, looking into the sun, but nice to get a different angle.
At least 3 Firecrest were at Conwy RSPB from December 2019 to February 2020
I was lucky to photograph a couple over a few visits. Many, many hours stood in the same spot to get these little gems. Well worth it.
After drawing a blank at Burton Mere for almost 4 months, I gave up and paid a visit to Leighton Moss. Reedlings were showing VERY well along the causeway. Water Rail, Marsh Tit and Marsh Harrier also around.
Sometimes, you are in the right place at the right time
With the water frozen over at Burton, I was hoping to grab some pictures of Bearded Reedlings foraging at the edge of the reedbed. No such luck. However, a Water Vole was hiding in a pile of cut reeds and made a dash for it over the ice.
Then on to Talacre to look for Snow Bunting. A single, unbelievably confiding bird, was feeding along the strand line
Well, autum is the best time to see them. . .
Continuing on from the Kingfisher at the Spinnies, another distant one from CQ, along with high tide action from a Kestrel, Peregrine, Black Tailed Godwit and Common Redshank
For some reason, it’s been nearly 10 years since I last visited the Spinnies.
Kingfishers had been showing VERY well in front of the recently built Viley hide, however, today, they weren’t so photogenic. Pictures all from other hides
